The Tennessee League is committed to helping new teams form and current teams thrive!
Individual students are welcome to participate in the Tennessee League as independent riders, however joining a team offers an even better experience.
NICA-Tennessee teams provide student-athletes with the coaching and support necessary to reach their athletic potential, build character, and enjoy the camaraderie of a group.
Our teams give a place for everyone, engaging entire families through an intentionally inclusive environment. By implementing youth development principles that focus on play and physical literacy, we can create a new paradigm shift for young student-athletes that prioritizes a desire to participate in healthy outdoor behaviors, builds confidence within themselves and develops strong, positive relationships among their peers. This approach creates a team culture that encourages entire families to support one another by staying active for life.
NICA is bigger than bikes… our teams dive deeper than just a good ride.
TEAM COMPOSITION
School-based Club or School-based Sanctioned Team
School-based teams are the most effective way to engage new riders and establish a lasting program. School-based teams are comprised of students from a single public or private elementary, middle and/or high school. By allowing students to participate within their own school community—including those who are homeschooled but zoned for the school—these teams significantly streamline recruitment efforts and build stronger local connections. School-based teams help more students discover mountain biking as a viable and available athletic option.
Composite Team
Composite teams can include all elementary, middle and high school riders within a specific geographic area to include public, private and homeschool students that do not have a school-based team available to them. Composite teams are intended to support the development of school-based teams. Starting a composite team is an excellent way to encourage the formation of future school-based programs. Notably, many composite teams continue to support school-based teams in their development by sharing resources, coaches, and establishing a positive community. Please note that composite teams are subject to team rider limits, including scoring splits as outlined in the NICA-Tennessee Handbook in order to encourage school-based team formation.
For more information regarding types of teams, please refer to the NICA-Tennessee Handbook located on the events page.
TEAM REGISTRATION
All teams are required to register with the League at the start of the season. Registration provides essential insurance coverage for the team’s coaches, volunteers, and supports League programs. To register your team, contact the League Director to get started. If you have any questions regarding the NICA Pit Zone registration process, please reach out to your League Director.
TEAM SCORING & DIVISIONS
There are Division I and Division II teams within NICA Leagues. All NICA-Tennessee League teams are currently Division II Teams. Division I and Division II teams score separately within Leagues but are treated equally in all other aspects. The separation is intended to provide a fair competitive environment. Teams are awarded points after every League event which count toward team standings for the overall series. Points from both girls and boys contribute to a team’s overall score, though a team does not need both to score for a race.
For Division II, the team’s score is the highest score possible out of the following boy/girl combinations:
BBBG
BBGG
BGGG
For more information regarding Team Scoring and Divisions, please refer to the NICA-Tennessee Handbook located on the events page.
